Arsene Wenger attempted to explain why he dropped Alexandre Lacazette ahead of Arsenal’s game against Liverpool.

Wenger claims that Lacazette is currently still adapting to the Premier League, which is why he chose to start Danny Welbeck on Sunday for what turned out to be another humiliating loss at the hands of Liverpool.

“Lacazette is still in an adaptation phase, and it’s down to the fact this trio [Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Danny Welbeck] finished well last season,” he said.

“I used them as well on occasions in the Premier League.

“It’s difficult to choose from but I have a strong offensive bench.”

It’s strange that Mohamed Salah only signed for Liverpool from Roma in June doesn’t appear to be needing an adaption stage… In fact, the 25-year-old winger looked as if he was adapting pretty well as he picked up the ball in his own half against the Gunners before scoring his second Premier League goal – third for Liverpool overall – and winning Man of the Match…

As much as most Gooners love Welbz, the decision to start him over Lacazette and Olivier Giroud was perplexing at best.

Before whatever that was that we saw against Liverpool, the striker had only created two chances during the opening two matches of the season. He also completed 78% of his passes and 75% of his shots were on target.

Against Jurgen Klopp’s side, he had just one shot and that was off target.

Lacazette, on the other hand, created four chances over two appearances and while his shot accuracy has been slightly worse than Welbz (67%), his overall movement has generally been pretty good.

Plus, you know, there’s the same fact that Wenger has already benched Arsenal’s record signing after two games, yet Alexis Sanchez was immune last season despite a string of poor performances.
