Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has kept hopes alive of a third summer signing for the club after revealing that he was open to recruiting what he deems as “an exceptional player”.
The French manager has made just two signings throughout the whole summer transfer window in the form of left-back Sead Kolasinac and former Lyon forward Alexandre Lacazette.
Both new recruits appear to have settled in well at the Emirates and have shown their talents during both pre-season friendly matches and in last weekend’s Community Shield victory over Chelsea.
While 26-year-old Lacazette showed his pace on the pitch, Kolasinac was the true star of the clash against Chelsea on Sunday after the former Schalke defender headed the equalising goal to take the game to penalties.
When asked about signing a third player, Wenger made it clear that he would only go in for a player who could drastically improve his squad, which is no doubt an exciting prospect for the Gunners fans.
“We are open to an exceptional player,” he told Sky Sports. “However, just to remind you we have 33 players and they are all good players.”
“That’s unmanageable to bring one more player in for the sake of it would be stupid, but if we find an exceptional one, we will do it.”
The Arsenal manager, who recently signed a new deal which would extend his reign at the club for a further two seasons, will be keen to improve on their previous campaign.
Despite winning the FA Cup the Gunners finished outside the top four in the Premier League and missed out on a Champions League spot for the first time in Wenger’s 20 year reign.
The club have started the season off on the right tracks with the confidence from winning the Community Shield expected to translate into their Premier League opener against Leicester City.
Arsenal host Craig Shakespeare’s side on Friday evening and the Emirates and will be hoping to take away three points to kickstart their season.
