What You Need To Know About Matthias Ginter Arsenal’s Reported New Signing

Expecting Wenger to stop his pursuit of youngster is akin to expecting a leopard to clean up its’ spots and that is simply an impossibility. So far, Arsenal’s solitary signing of the summer is unknown, untested, unproven and young French striker Yaya Sanogo and while fans are expectantly waiting for Wenger to splash the cash on experienced quality signings, he seems to be coming up with yet another youngster. I won’t discountenance the fact that he is desirous of signing Luis Suarez but Liverpool’s hard stance means he isn’t close to bringing the Uruguayan to the Emirates. According to reports that besieged the media over the weekend, Arsenal are closing in on the capture of German U-21 star Matthias Ginter for a modest fee of 6 million Pounds. Who in God’s name is Ginter?

He isn’t a big name and isn’t coming at a price that will see Arsenal flexing their new found financial muscle but on the talent side, he isn’t far off. The 19 year-old German boasts of huge versatility as he can play at center-back, defensive midfield and can even play as an emergency striker (though I doubt he will ever have to do that at Arsenal, too many people are queueing up for that role). Standing at 6 feet, he boasts of the physical presence that has eluded the Gunners since Viera jumped ship to Turin. Diaby could have filled the role but his nearness to the treatment table has perpetually robbed him of such impact.

While been used in the defensive midfield role owing to his physique and robust defensive display complemented with an adept change of pace and reading of the game, his preference seems to be for the center-back position.

“It sounds weird for many, perhaps, because most want to play as aggressively as possible, however it suits me best in central defence. I can see that now. In this position, I see my future,”

Boasting of these qualities, he seems a shrewd buy for Arsenal. The Gunners are short in the defensive midfield position and have been linked with a move for Mourane Felliani but such a move will eat a chunk out of Wenger’s transfer kitty and might jeopardize the club’s chances of landing Suarez. While Felliani is an important target, Suarez remains the key target. The Gunners also need a center-back. Ginter could help fill both void. While he won’t be the first choice center-back, he could get regular games in the defensive midfield position and also have some games as an emergency center -back.

For those expressing reservations owing to his age or price-tag, I will be swift to remind you that Goetze was less than 21 when he joined Bayern for over 30 million Pounds. How old was Reus when he ripped Real Madrid apart? As for price-tag, transfer fee don’t play football, talent does. Carroll was bought for 35 million Pounds but was loaned out after 1 full season because he couldn’t justify half of the fee.

Labeling Ginter a poor buy because of his touted price-tag is injustice. If he has proven himself in the Bundesliga, he will almost certainly replicate it in the EPL. Germans and French players are best suited for the defensive midfield role owing to their strength, discipline and efficiency.

Ginter is a younger and cheaper version of Felliani. Let’s go for him if he would help us in our bid to land suarez.

  1. Another thing you might not know about Ginter – he said 6 weeks ago that he isn’t going anywhere for at least another year.

  2. We Gunners funs we dont actually want to know who the player is, BUT after performance and football display. If Wenger is really sure of Ginter, we dont have any problem but to wait to see.
