Granit Xhaka has revealed what Arsene Wenger said during his half-time talk on Saturday.
Arsenal were booed off the pitch at half-time by their own fans on Saturday after going 1-0 down to Swansea at home. However, the Gunners managed to turn it around in the second half and Xhaka believes this is partly down to what Wenger said in the dressing room.
“The manager told us at half-time that we had to give more, that we had to be more aggressive and play quicker,” Xhaka said post-match.
“You have to pay compliments to Swansea – they stood deep in the first half and were good defensively. In the second half, we played as we know we can and it was very important for us to win.”
To be fair, it’s not as if Wenger was reinventing the wheel by telling the Gunners they needed to give more. Anyone could see that and the players should have known this. However, I imagine there was probably more to his speech than that. Remember when Theo Walcott compared Wenger’s team talks to Al Pacino in the film ‘Any Given Sunday’?
Most Gooners would love to be a fly on the wall of the Arsenal dressing room during half-time, especially during a game where big changes are needed. Wenger doesn’t like to shout so it would be interesting to see how he approaches the situation.
Arsenal went 1-0 down on Saturday for the third time in a week. The Gunners also went behind at Goodison Park last Sunday before coming back to thump Everton 5-2. On Tuesday, the conceded to Norwich in the League Cup, meaning that 18-year-old Eddie Nketiah had to come on and save the day with his late brace.
