The season is fast winding down and after it comes the summer when the transfer window will be widely open with teams expected to splash the cash to beef up their squad and Arsenal aren’t expected to be left out. In fact, Arsenal are expected to be a big player in the summer transfer window. Arsenal have shown huge improvement this season challenging for the Premier League title and looking set to break the protracted drought with them already through to the semi-finals of the FA Cup but that doesn’t mean the team is perfect. They can still make do with quality additions in some areas. One of such areas is the striking department. Arsenal have been linked with moves for strikers and one of the primed targets has been Athletico Madrid stiker Diego Costa and attacker Julian Draxler who reports claim Wenger intends converting from a left winger into an out and out striker like Thierry Henry.
Former Arsenal legend Robert Pires was quizzed on who Arsenal should sign between both men as it looks unlikely that Arsenal would land both men since they cost a fee in the same region.
“For me signing a striker to help Giroud is the top priority for the summer. I think Wenger will try to sign a striker” Pires said.
Asked whether he would prefer Costa to Draxler?
“Yes, we have Cazorla, Podolski… in Draxler’s position.
“I do not know Draxler so well, I’ve only seen him on TV and he looks good. But I think that paying his release clause is too much.
“If Diego Costa’s release clause in £32m and Draxler costs around £38m there is no doubt. I would sign Costa. But this is just my opinion. I don’t’ speak about transfers with Wenger and the Arsenal officials.”
“If Wenger has two forwards he can even play with both up front.
“Liverpool do that with Luis Suarez or Sturridge and when I played we use to play with Henry and Bergkamp up front. Signing Diego Costa would be great news.”
Turning to possible alternatives, Pires continued: “I love Benzema, but I know that his signing is just a dream, because it is impossible to lure him from Real Madrid.”
“Griezmann has the perfect profile to play for Arsenal. He is a great player. I follow La Liga weekly and I like him a lot,” Pires told IBTimes UK.
Well said Pires and I totally agree with him. What Arsenal need more is an out and out striker and that is what Costa is. Draxler is huge talent but in his favoured position, Arsenal are already spoilt for choice with Ozil, Cazorla, Podolski and Campbell who will be returning in the summer. it makes no sense to spend 38m Pounds on a player who could end up been surplus to requirements when with only 32m Pounds, we would land a player that would fill a position that is desperately crying for a competent body.
Just like Pires, I would pick Costa over Draxler.
