Arsenal could be ready for a shock swoop for Iker Casillas. The Real Madrid keeper is unsettled at Real Madrid and could be tempted to move away from the Bernabeu.
Arsene Wenger has been in the market for a goalkeeper as he was unimpressed by some of the performances from Wojciech Szczesny last season. His main target has been Julio Cesar but with the knowledge that Casillas could be available, Wenger has switched his focus.
The main stumbling block in the deal is the price. Arsenal are only willing to offer £8 million for a goalkeeper who is 32, but Madrid are unwilling to do business anywhere below £15 million. Casillas is a World Cup and European Championship winner and has bags of talent. He is a true leader and would bring a lot to the Arsenal dressing room.
Arsenal have left it late to start their transfer business and may well have to pay over the odds in any deal and paying £15 million for Casillas may not be the worst thing to do. His winning mentality would help the Gunners in their season while his experience could help plug a leaky defence.
It would take a lot for him to leave Real Madrid, the club he has spent his entire career at so if Arsenal are serious about offering him a deal, they had better act quick to try to persuade him to leave. They would also have to beat Fenerbahce in their Champions League qualifier to ensure any chance of signing the Spain goalkeeper.
