Arsene Wenger insists he is not worried about trying to fit Mesut Ozil and incoming new signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the same Arsenal team. The Armenian’s move to north London is expected to be announced imminently, with Mkhitaryan already having completed a medical and agreed terms on a move that sees Alexis Sanchez move to Manchester United in a straight swap the other way. But Arsenal already have a wealth of creative midfield options to choose from, while Mkhitaryan and Ozil both prefer to play in the hole.
Wenger is not worried, however, and believes the two playmakers can operate in the same side along with the rest of Arsenal’s creative midfielders and attackers. Asked how he could fit Mkhitaryan and Ozil into the same team, Wenger explained: ‘Just play the good players! They can always play together.
‘[Against Crystal Palace] what have you on the pitch? They’re all attacking players. [Alex] Iwobi, Ozil, [Jack] Wilshere, [Alexandre] Lacazette, [Granit] Xhaka. They’re all offensive players, basically.’ Mkhitaryan may not be the only January arrival at the Emirates, with Wenger also working on a deal to sign Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, which will create even more selection dilemmas for the Frenchman.
Asked what system he would play to get Aubameyang and Lacazette in the same side, he added: ‘We are not as far as that to think about that problem!’ Arsenal sent a transfer delegation led by chief executive Ivan Gazidis to Germany on Sunday to negotiate a deal for Aubameyang, though the two clubs are still believed to be some way apart in their valuations.
