The European competition was the only piece of silverware left that the Gunners could win.

But they succumbed to a 1-0 loss against Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano, finishing 2-1 on aggregate o the Spanish side.

Diego Costa struck just before half-time to send the north London outfit home, with another season in Europe’s second-tier tournament beckoning.

And with Wenger leaving at the end of the season, his final chance to give the fans a trophy have ended miserably.

The Frenchman was resigned in his post-match interview, and even referred to his side as “they” as he prepares to exit the club he has managed for 22 years.

“I am like the team,” Wenger said.

“Very sad and very disappointed. I will take some time to recover from that.

“Even very frustrated as well because when you go out of a competition after 180 minutes we had it is very difficult to take.

“It is now some time to think about what to do for next season.

I think there are some good ingredients and they will bounce back and with the right additions they should be capable of competing.

“It was a very intense game between two teams who gave everything.

“Good luck to Atletico in the final and I would say the winner of tonight’s game will be the winner of the competition.”
