Arsenal have injury troubles in defence and it has reportedly led to boss Unai Emery considering a swoop for Real Valladolid ace Fernando Calero in January.
As noted by The Sun, the Gunners have a real problem on their hands as after being hit with a huge setback as Rob Holding was ruled out for the rest of the season, Shkodran Mustafi also picked up a problem at the weekend.
With both Nacho Monreal and Laurent Koscielny not playing a great deal of football so far this season, it does raise a big question mark over the Arsenal defence, one that has already conceded 20 goals in 16 Premier League games so far this season.
That’s enough to give them the worst defensive record of the top five sides in the standings, and so it’s seemingly an area in which they need to improve even without the current defensive absentees.
According to The Mirror, via reports in Spain, Arsenal have set their sights on Calero in the winter transfer market, with the Valladolid star said to have a £10m release clause in his contract, albeit both Sevilla and Borussia Dortmund are also reportedly keen on the 23-year-old.
With Arsenal set to compete on multiple fronts through the second half of the season given their ongoing involvement in domestic cups and the Europa League, reinforcements may well be needed to help ensure that Emery and his side’s impressive current unbeaten run isn’t for nothing.
Calero has been an ever-present so far this season, making 15 appearances in La Liga and not missing a minute of football as of yet.
