Petr Cech has been told he is no longer Arsenal’s number one keeper after his hamstring injury handed Bernd Leno his chance.
That’s according to an article in Wednesday’s Daily Star which, on the face of it, seems to make a lot of sense.
When Arsenal signed Bernd Leno in the summer, most expected him to go straight into the side as the number one choice. But Arsenal, who made the odd decision to hand Cech the number one squad number despite looking for his replacement, was handed the reigns and looked set to stay in goal for the long-haul until his hamstring pinged.
In a way, it has been shrewd management from Unai Emery.
Instead of upsetting Cech by binning him right away, he has allowed him time to prove his role in the squad. There can be little argument about who has shown themselves to be the better option for the football Arsenal are trying to play, so Cech being demoted would come as no surprise to most Arsenal fans.
Cech has recovered from his hamstring strain and will return to the starting lineup as the cup keeper for Arsenal’s Carabao Cup game against Blackpool.
Emery, according to the Star who have historically close ties with Arsenal, will opt for whatever keeper seems more ‘confident’ for the game against Liverpool.
“We are looking for the confidence in each keeper,” Emery told reporters at his pre-game press conference. “But Cech will start the Blackpool match, after coming back from his injury.”
