Unai Emery has confirmed Danny Welbeck has undergone surgery on a broken ankle and it looks like the Arsenal forward will struggle to play again this season.
Welbeck was stretchered off with his right ankle in a brace during our 0-0 draw with Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League on Thursday night after falling awkwardly while challenging for a header midway through the first half.
The striker was immediately taken to hospital to have the injury assessed and to undergo x-rays amid concerns he’d broken his ankle and Emery has now confirmed those fears this evening.
The boss says Welbeck has broken his ankle and had his operation on Friday. Such an injury could take over six months to recover from so it seems unlikely we’ll see the England international play for Arsenal again this season.
Speaking after Sunday’s frustrating 1-1 draw with Wolves, Emery told reporters:
This is a devastating blow for Arsenal and Welbeck as the forward had started the season in fine form and he’s a very useful squad player to have available given he can play anywhere across the front line.
His contract is due to expire in June so you have to wonder whether we’ll see Welbeck in an Arsenal shirt again as there’s a decent chance he may leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.
It would be a disappointing end to what’s been a frustrating career at the Emirates as Welbeck’s time here has been blighted by a number of injury problems that have restricted him to making just 88 league appearances since joining from Manchester United in 2014.
Let’s hope Danny can make a swift and full recovery as it would be a shame for his time at Arsenal to end like this….
