Swansea’s Michu To Become Arsenal’s New Dennis Bergkamp?

The problem with having good players is the desire to get a clone of them. Change through Arsenal, leaving Wenger and Arsenal with the difficult job of finding another like them. Henry, Bergkamp, Viera, Pires and Campbell just to mention a few.

Arsenal are still looking for the ‘new’ Henry despite the English press touting Walcott as the new Henry owing to his pace and desire to play upfront. The Frenchman made his transition from a winger to a striker but Walcott’s wayward finishing has left a lot to be desired. Even Henry will be bemused more than impressed at his finishing at times. How about Viera? Diaby has the resemblance of the Frenchman but it seems the semblance stops at the height and nationality. In terms of fitness they are kilometres apart.

Bergkamp is also another. Van Persie was brought in as his clone but he has since jumped ship. Jovetic who was seen as a similar player to Bergkamp and Van Persie but elected to join Manchester City but it seems Wenger has found another player that could be a ‘Bergkamp’ for Arsenal. He is Swansea’s Spanish striker Michu.

‘I see him like a little bit, position-wise, like a Bergkamp, more than an up-front striker.

‘They can play with both [strikers] because Michu’s the kind of striker who is a midfielder as well. He can play both positions, that’s why they are 4-4-1-1 or you can call that a 4-4-2 when Wilfried Bony plays.

Wenger believes he can be another Bergkamp owing to his versatility. He doesn’t just stay up front looking for passes, he is willing to drop into midfield to get the ball and create chances for the strikers. This is akin to what the Dutch master did while at Arsenal. He wasn’t renowned for been lethal but his assists and link up play were top notch.

But can Michu play with Giroud? Giroud is good at the link up role and Michu will find it difficult to dislodge him from that role but he could play behind him is a supporting striker role. That would be a little problem because Arsenal already have ample midfielders that can operate in that role (Cazorla, Rosicky, Wilshere and Ozil). Another way he can be used is in a 2 striker formation. This is very practicable. He and Giroud would form a devastating partnership but the only hiccup is Wenger’s reluctance to revert back to 4-4-4-2 formation.

In the current formation Arsenal play, he will end up jostling with Giroud for the lone striker slot and that isn’t what Arsenal need. The Gunners need someone that can play through the center and also on the wings.
