According to reports, Arsenal are on the verge of yet another summer signing. Reports claim NEC Nijmegen has been spotted at London Colney to undergo a medical with Arsenal ahead of a two weeks trial. Smit who had decided against renewing his contract with NEC Nijmegen in the Netherlands and is on the hunt for a new club will be spending the next two weeks at The Arsenal Training Centre in London Colney trying to impress Wenger.
It’s understood that the highly rated 6ft 3in goalkeeper Smit had also been offered a trial with Championship outfit Brighton and Hove Albion this summer, but has rejected those offers to join Arsenal. As he sees this as a once in a life time opportunity stating ‘This opportunity I have to seize.’
Arsenal is well-stocked for goalkeepers, with Petr Cech, David Ospina and Wojciech Szczesy all in the Arsenal books. Petr Cech is expected to continue as Wenger’s preferred number 1 next season, with Colombian keeper David Ospina a more-than-capable deputy to Cech, while Poland International Wojciech Szczesy is expected to return on loan to the Italian capital, Roma this season for a second stint.
What role Smit is to play in the Arsenal side is yet to be ascertain as he will most likely not be involved with the first team anytime soon. Smit who only made 11 appearances for NEC last term in the reserve team, keeping three clean sheets will be hoping to get a long term deal with the Arsenal side.
