We bring you the most up to date transfer reports concerning Arsenal football club.
After being named PFA Player of the Season off the back of Leicester’s miraculous title-winning campaign last year, Mahrez was linked with several top European teams.
Arsenal was one of them.
In an interview with Sky Sports, the winger has admitted that, at first, he did want to leave Leicester as he knew he might not have these big clubs come back for him again. However, he chose to remain loyal to the Foxes, even signing a new four-year deal in August 2016, which takes him up until 2020.
“At first I wanted to go,” he admitted.
“When you do a season like I did, you start thinking, ‘You have to take this train, maybe it won’t come again’.
“There are big clubs, you don’t know what’s going to happen. Are they going to come back for you in two seasons or three seasons? You don’t know.
“Then you have some people around you who have their opinion, your family as well. In the end, though every person has a choice and [in the end] I was thinking I prefer to stay and I don’t regret it. It was a good choice.”
However, the Leicester team that Mahrez agreed to stay with are a very different Leicester to the one we see today.
The Foxes are now treading water down in mid-table after shamelessly binning the man that led them to the title against all the odds, Claudio Ranieri, and have just about managed to escape relegation.
For this season, it seems that Mahrez is open to considering a move once their season is over.
“I’m not really thinking about this summer yet, let’s finish this season and we’ll see,” he said.
“There’s still three games to go, still some good games to play. I don’t want to put something in my head. At the moment I’m in Leicester, I’m happy and we’ll see.”
He added, “I want to play Champions League every year, I want to be at a big club and win trophies, that’s my target.”
When asked if he could do that with Leicester, he replied, “Why not? We’ll see.”
According to the Metro, Arsene Wenger wants to return for the 26-year-old after failing to sign him last season.
