Arsenal risk losing some of their best players at the end of this season if they are not able to win a major trophy or proof their mettle as a big club.
Ex-Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack has advised Mesut Ozil to leave Arsenal and to join Bayern Munich if he’s serious about winning ‘big’ trophies in his career.
The German has 18 months to run on his existing deal at the Emirates and he has an offer on the table to extend his stay with the Gunners.
However the former Real Madrid attacking midfielder is seeking a substantial pay rise and, though Arsenal do not want to sell him, they will reassess their position should they not reach an agreement by the summer transfer window.
One likely suitor for Ozil would be Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and former Chelsea midfielder Ballack has told his compatriot his career would be best served by making the move.
‘Mesut Ozil is an outstanding footballer,’ Ballack told Bild.
‘Many clubs like him. But he knows that he enjoys a very high place at Arsenal. He lives in London, one of the most beautiful cities ever.
‘To this end, Arsenal is a club that has an incredible impact on the world. If you are a top player in England, the cult around you is bigger than in Germany. You are treated more respectfully, especially. These are all reasons for an extension [with Arsenal].
‘But if he could win something big, the chance at Bayern is, in my opinion, bigger.’
