Ian Wright has urged Arsene Wenger to stop making excuses for his Arsenal team.
The Gunners lost 3-1 to Premier League leaders Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium last weekend to leave Arsenal 12 points behind Pep Guardiola’s men after 11 games.
Wenger was critical of referee Michael Oliver following the 3-1 defeat, while the Frenchman branded England and Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling “a diver”.
Arsenal have only managed to win one of their six Premier League games on the road this season to raise concerns about their ability to challenge for the title.
Indeed, the Gunners have lost to Stoke City, Liverpool and Watford in the away fixtures in the Premier League before Manchester City’s comfortable win at The Etihad.
Wenger signed a new two-year contract in the summer despite Arsenal finishing in fifth place in the Premier League table last term to miss out on a Champions League spot.
Former Arsenal striker Wright has urged Wenger to stop letting his Gunners players off the hook by blaming officials and opposition players for their defeats.
“You’re giving them a way out [by making excuses],” Wright told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“It happened last time Arsenal played Man City. Wenger isn’t wrong with the officiating. He got it wrong.”
Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 when Thierry Herny and Patrick Vieira helped to fire Wenger’s men to their famous unbeaten season.
