Arsenal are hoping to sell Mohamed Elneny by the European transfer deadline at the end of the month, despite signing him to a new contract earlier this year.

The Daily Mail write that Arsenal ‘hope to offload’ Elneny to Marseille in the next two weeks. The club are trying to cut their wage bill, as it’s currently at its limit, making new signings and contract extensions problematic.

It might seem strange that the club are trying to sell Elneny, just a few months after he agreed a new deal, but it’s not difficult to understand why they originally gave him one.

At the time, Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey all looked like they could leave over the summer, and there were no guarantees that anyone else would join. Giving the Egyptian a new contract at least ensured Arsenal would have Elneny and Granit Xhaka going into the new season.

Things went a lot better than expected in the transfer market though, with Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira both arguably ready for starting spots from day one.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles also signed a new deal, and Ramsey decided not to leave, for now at least. Arsenal suddenly have plenty of options, and Elneny is starting to look surplus to requirements.

This has happened before though, and the 26-year-old tends to fight his way back into the team when it does, so don’t write him off yet.
