Villarreal star Santi Cazorla has revealed the one regret he has from his six-year stay at Arsenal. The 33-year-old was released by the Gunners in the summer after a torturous two-year stint on the sidelines with an Achilles problem. The Spaniard resumed training with Arsene Wenger’s squad towards the end of last season but the Frenchman would not risk Cazorla’s long-term fitness by giving him a sentimental farewell during a game. Cazorla signed a one-year deal with former club Villarreal after leaving the Emirates but he’s revealed that he regrets not being able to properly say goodbye to Arsenal fans on the pitch.
‘The people love me there and I’ll always have a connection with Arsenal, so much affection,’ Cazorla told the Guardian. ‘Not being able to say goodbye playing at the Emirates is like a thorn in my side. If I had to leave, I wanted it to be in front of the fans.’
Arsenal resume their Premier League campaign against Newcastle United next Saturday following the international break. Unai Emery has won two and lost two from Arsenal’s opening four fixtures, though they faced rivals Chelsea and Manchester City in their first two.
