There is the need to retain key players over a long period in every club and Arsenal legend Sol Campbell has urged Ozil to sign a new deal with Arsenal.
There were reports that indicated yesterday that Ozil wants to sign a new Arsenal deal but on the condition that Wenger will stay beyond his current contract.
The German star has been in talks with Emirates chiefs for months over a contract extension but Ozil is yet to agree terms.
But the former England defender believes Ozil should ‘compromise’ and pen a new deal without reassurances over Wenger’s long-term future.
‘Like any top player Ozil wants to play with the manager who signed him. It’s nice to keep that continuity going with the same manager,’ Campbell told Sky Sports.
‘I can understand why he said that but who’s got a crystal ball? Arsene is not going to sign a four year contract so really that’s academic.
‘I’m sure they’re quite close to signing deals with both players [Ozil and Sanchez], it’s all about sitting down, compromising and signing on the dotted line.’
Campbell, 42, added: ‘We don’t know the future so it’s all about securing the players’ futures and if the manager stays, the manager stays.
‘You don’t want to have the club in a ransom head-lock because of the manager.’
