Daily Mirror reporter John Cross feels Aaron Ramsey has overtaken Jack Wilshere in the Arsenal pecking order. The Welsh midfielder has been exceptional since the start of the season and has scored five goals already, two coming in the 3-1 win over Sunderland on Saturday.
Ramsey signed for Arsenal in 2011 from Cardiff City for £5 million. He started to show glimpses of his potential before a horror injury against Stoke City sidelined him for several months.
He took a little while to get back to his best but showed towards the end of last season what he could so. He was the best player, behind Olivier Giroud, in pre-season and has carried that form in to the new season being named Arsenal Player of the Month for August.
“I think it’s confidence as much as fitness with Ramsey. He believes in his body again.”
“I thought he was going to be a really special player before his injury and that curtailed him. When he came back he didn’t quite believe in himself or have the confidence to go full tilt. But now he’s back to his best – he covers every blade of grass, and he looks strong and dynamic.”
“It’s interesting that last season when players needed to be moved about it was he who was moved out to the left. But at Sunderland on Saturday it was Jack Wilshere who was shifted.”
“Ramsey has moved right to the very top of the list – it’s Ramsey, Özil and on other. He’s playing out of his skin.”
Wilshere has struggled for fitness at the start of the season and is still yet to regain match fitness however he is unable to have a rest due to Arsenal’s harsh fixture schedule and the clubs increasing injury problems. His selection for England has also worn him out.
