This summer transfer window has become the most arduous for Arsenal as the club has struggled to sign players despite having huge reserves.
We have either lost our targets to other clubs or we see clubs rebuffed our offers for players – reports emerged that Arsenal former captain Thomas Vermalean was set to return to the Emirates but the Belgian has completed medicals with Italian side Roma.
The former Arsenal player joined Barcelona in the summer of 2014 in a £15 million deal but struggled to make any impact as he was fervently injured during his stint at the Camp Nou. Barcelona confirmed on Sunday on Twitter that the player had been given permission to undergo a medical with the Giallorossi.
Vermaelen is likely to form a central defensive pairing with Kostas Manolas at his new club. Roma have agreed to a €10m deal, where €2m has been paid upfront while a compulsory €8m will be paid the next year. The player has now been unveiled at the club.
Vermalen was linked with a return to the Emirates with Wenger looking to bolster his defense. The defense of Arsenal have been left thread bare with recent injury to Gabriel Paulista and this has condemned Wenger to buying a defender.
