Arsenal defender, Per Mertesacker believes Arsenal Goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczesny played a vital role in the Gunners’ 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. The 23 year old Pole who endured a difficult start to 2013, has been impressive for the Gunners this season, keeping 5 clean sheets in total and looks more assured in goal.
Szczesny was once again at the peak of his powers on Saturday where he hardly did anything wrong and made two stunning saves from Mile Jedinak and Joel Ward to deny the Eagles any way back into the game and Mertesacker also acknowledged that fact.
Mertesacker said: “We haven’t needed the goalkeeper much this season but in situations like that we desperately need him and he did a great job.”
Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger used Fabianski at some part in the business end of last season, and even brought in 27 year old italian Goalkeeper, Emiliano Viviano on loan from Palermo but both shot-stoppers have barely kicked a ball this season, such has been the form of the Arsenal no1.
In recent seasons where Arsenal have challenged for the title, the Gunners have been undone in goal with shaky performances from their goalkeepers but with the form their no1 has started with, and the strength in depth they’ve got in that department this season, it seems Wenger’s side are well equipped in goal, to mount a sustained title challenge.
