If there is one player that will always see things in a positive light at Arsenal, it is former captain Cesc Fabregas. Despite leaving for his boyhood club Barcelona, he has still kept tabs with the ongoings at Arsenal. He has let out his counsel over the signing of German midfielder Mesut Ozil. The general feeling was that Arsenal signed a luxury in Ozil while neglecting the more important positions but the Spanish midfielder tends to differ.
“If you have the chance to sign Mesut Ozil then you can’t let it pass you by,”
“He wanted to play for Arsenal. Wenger won him over and when you have the chance with a player like that it doesn’t matter if you already have seven or eight who are similar, you have to take it.
“Ozil is the man who makes the difference in the final third. He will find so much space in the Premier League and he’s a player who with space kills you. His final pass is brilliant. And he will score more goals in England than he did in Spain. He is a spectacular signing.
“Ozil will bring the best out in [Aaron] Ramsey and [Jack] Wilshere. They understand football the same way.
“The only player who maybe is a bit different is Theo Walcott but you also need that type of player because it’s true that at the end of pass, pass, pass you need a Pedro — someone who will get behind the opposition. Someone who gives depth and hits space.”
I can’t but agree with Fabregas. You can’t have too much quality in a team. Having Cazorla, Ozil, Wilshere, Rosicky and Arteta in a team isn’t a liability but an asset, as the Gunners now have options and can afford to adjust the team to suit the opposition.
Those berating the signing of Ozil should quickly remember that Arteta and Rosicky are already in the twilight of their Arsenal career as they are already in their 30s which means they need a successor. What better successor to Rosicky if not the German magician?
Instead of vilifying Wenger for signing Ozil, he should be celebrated for been forward looking to buy one of the best playmakers in world football for a decent fee.
