Leicester City have had an £8 million bid for top defensive midfielder for Nice star Nampalys Mendy rejected last season. Mendy was Leicester’s top target last summer before switching their sights and signing then Caen defensive midfielder N’Golo Kante.
Kante went on to become a success in the Premier League, getting commendations and admirers in the process . Kante ended last season as the best defensive midfielder in the league. Arsenal fans are ecstatic with reports from France that Leicester are in the market again for Mendy after it was revealed Kante was unwilling to sign a contract extension in Leicester. Some reports even claim the Frenchman has agreed to sign for Arsenal and medical is already scheduled for next week.
Though Leicester have placed a £20 million pound price tag on the 25-year- old it has not deterred Arsenal who view him as the closest player to Claude Makelele who played for Real Madrid and Chelsea before retiring.
At Arsenal, Kante will likely partner new signing Granit Xhaka and together they pair are likely to form a perfect middle of the park pairing. The pairing will allow the attack minded Xhaka to occasional go forward and try his long range shoot and also spray his “Pirlo” trademark passes for forward team mates.
This though might mean that there will no place in the starting line-up for the likes of Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere and Francis Coquelin as the remaining spot in the forward line will go to Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey and Alexis Sanchez in Wenger’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation.
Kante is worth the £20 million price tag but the million dollar question is if the often economic Arsene Wenger will shell out such money for Kante having paid £30 million this week for Granit Xhaka.
