Arsenal are still seriously interested in Mainz defender Abdou Diallo and are very likely to make a concrete move for him in the coming weeks, according to the Daily Cannon.
It was earlier reported that Borussia Dortmund had joined Arsenal in the race to sign the 22-year-old, and it is believed that the German side now have the edge.
However, new reports now claim Arsenal made contact over a move for the player last summer when he arrived at Mainz.
Though strange, it’s not unheard of for a club to declare interest in a player soon after joining another club and letting him know they’ll be monitoring his progress.
If the reports are true, the interest seems to have worked out well for both sides as the young defender made 30 league starts in his first season at the club.
The Gunners are in need of defensive reinforcement and even though Sokratis Papstathopoulos is touted as a possible target, the Gunners might decide to sign Diallo instead or both of them as Sven Mislintat is a big fan of the former AS Monaco man, having watched him during his time at Dortmund.
