Mikel Arteta has emerged as a top candidate to replace Arsene Wenger as manager.
The Independent report that the Spaniard is keen on succeeding his former boss and has already begun planning his backroom staff.
The Spaniard made 150 appearances for the Gunners between 2011-2016 and captained the side. He since left the north Londoners to take up a coaching role at Manchester City in 2016.
Another reported target Max Allegri has already hinted he will be staying with Juventus beyond this campaign and there is growing speculation that Arteta is now the likeliest replacement.
Also among those contacted by Arsenal during the process is another of their former captains, Patrick Vieira. Meanwhile Luis Enrique has also been heavily linked with the role.
The club remains confident of naming a successor before the World Cup begins on 14 June.
