Arsene Wenger has heaped praise on Michael Carrick, admitting he wished he had the chance to manage the Manchester United star.

After spending over a decade at Old Trafford and helping the club win five Premier League titles and the Champions League, Carrick was awarded a testimonial by United.

The England midfielder scored the equaliser in the fixture as a host of former stars came out to pay tribute to Carrick, who has made over 450 appearances for the Red Devils.

On Carrick’s testimonial, Gunners boss Wenger told the Arsenal website: ‘I give Michael my deepest congratulations for his testimonial. I think he deserves it hugely.

‘I would say personally I’m an admirer of his career, of his quality. One of my regrets is never having had him as a player because I think he was one of the greatest players in English football.

‘I believe as well that he did not always get the reward and the tribute, the recognition he deserved.

‘But I’m an admirer of Michael and I wish him all the best for the future.’
