Arsenal have been linked with plethora of players to fill various roles in the team in this summer window, one of such players is Lyon’s captain Maxime Gonalons. Arsenal’s search for a new defensive midfielder have seen them been linked with Gonalons, Capoue, Wanyama and most recently Felliani but it is not only the Gunners that Gonalons’ superlative performances last season caught their attention, it also caught that of Serie A giants, Napoli. The Serie A runners-up have made a move for the Frenchman but the interest was swiftly shot down by the player’s agent.
Frederic Guerra told Radio Kiss Kiss: “Gonalons to Napoli? You will have to ask the club.
“My client is on holiday at the moment and I have not spoken with him. I can also say that no clubs have spoken with me.
“I have talked to Gonalons before about Naples as a city, because we are friends and I am originally from there.
“He will come back from holiday on the 22nd. He had a good season with Lyon and he needs to relax.”
From the statement of the agent, it is clear that there has been no formal approach for the player, either from Arsenal or Napoli. It could also be depicted that the agent would be open to convincing Gonalons of a move to Italy since he hails from there.
It is obvious that interest in the Lyon captain is rife and will only intensify in upcoming months. If Arsenal are keen to get him, they must move fast in order to fend off competition from Napoli and other interested parties. Knowing Benitez for who he is, should he be keen on Gonalons, he will spend silly to get him.
Arsenal are in the hunt for a new defensive midfielder but it seems Wenger is yet to make up his mind as to who his preferred candidate is. Time will tell if it is going to be Capoue, Wanyama, Felliani or Gonalons.
