Martin Keown says Saturday was the first time Arsenal supporters can judge Unai Emery.
The Gunners were 3-1 winners against West Ham United at The Emirates on Saturday afternoon to secure their first win under the Spanish head coach.
Arsenal lost 2-0 to defending Premier League champions Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium earlier this month.
The Gunners succumbed to a 3-2 loss to Chelsea FC at Stamford Bridge following Marcos Alonso’s 81st-minute winner.
The north London side are still discovering their identity under Emery following his appointment at the end of May.
Arsenal managed to come out on top against West Ham United side that are still searching for their first victory following a tough start under Manuel Pellegrini.
Former Arsenal star Keown admitted that it was unfair to judge Emery until the Gunners’ performance against the Hammers at The Emirates on Saturday evening.
“This weekend against West Ham — a match that Arsenal would be expected to win — is the first time we can really judge Emery,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“The concern after the first two games is that the players have taken the changes the manager wants to make too literally.
“Emery’s Arsenal play with a high line. When you do so you have to be prepared to drop off and no one is. They also play out from the back but when that becomes impossible you have to play it forward.
“Is this down to a lack of understanding from the players or overemphasis from the manager? We will find out on Saturday.”
Arsenal finished in sixth place in the Premier League table to miss out on a Champions League spot for the second successive season.
The Gunners haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 when the north London outfit finished the campaign without a loss.
