Arsenal’s dreadful summer could be coming to a positive end with the possibility of signing Juan Mata. The Gunners have struggled in the transfer market so far this summer but could be boosted with the Spanish midfielder’s future uncertain at Stamford Bridge.
The exetremely talented Spaniard has made a superb impact since joining the Blues in 2011 and has gone on to win the FA Cup, Champions League and Europa League on his two-year stint at Chelsea.
However, Jose Mourinho’s return to the club has put Mata’s future in doubt. He was reported to have wanted Mata and Fernando Torres to leave over the summer due to their friendship with Iker Casillas, a player he had a bad relationship towards the end of his reign at Real Madrid.
Neither player has been sold but Mourinho was rumoured to have offered the midfielder as part of a deal for England forward Wayne Rooney, an action he later denied. Mata’s place at Chelsea came under scrutiny again as he was unused substitute in the club’s victory over Hull City Tigers on the opening day of the Premier League. He did return for the following visit of Aston Villa playing 65 minutes but his place is still in doubt.
The signings of Andre Schurrle and Willian have added further competition for a place in the team and Mourinho is willing to listen to offers for the former Valencia man. Arsene Wenger almost signed the playmaker in 2011 but were beaten by an eleventh hour bid by the Blues, a move that has been rewarding for Roman Abramovich’s men.
Wenger has had a frustrating summer so far losing out on Gonzalo Higuain, Luiz Gustavo and Luis Suarez but recent bids for Karim Benzema and Angel Di Maria along with the signing of Mata would give the Gunners a much better end to their summer.
