Jamie Carragher has identified Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Mesut Ozil as the two weak links in the side he selected against Chelsea last weekend. Emery has attempted to implement a new style of play since he succeeded Arsene Wenger, based on playing out from the back and pressing from the front. The change in emphasis has failed to reap instant dividends with Arsenal losing their opening two matches of the Premier League season against Manchester City and Chelsea. Gary Neville offered a passionate defence of Emery’s methods on Sky’s Monday Night Football show amid severe criticism from Carragher, who claimed the Spaniard would have to adapt in order to be a success in England. The former Manchester United star subsequently prompted his sparring partner to watch Mkhitaryan’s interview in which he detailed the thinking behind Emery’s masterplan. Carragher replied on twitter in typically cutting fashion, saying ‘If him an Ozil start pressing & running back they’ll have a chance! Mkhitaryan scored and provided an assist during Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at Stamford Bridge but was criticised for his defensive work, especially in the build-up to Pedro’s opener after he failed to track the run of Marcos Alonso. Ozil, meanwhile, was substituted with 22 minutes remaining when the score was locked at 2-2. Afterwards Emery said: ‘I changed because I felt we needed a bit more in the middle, not let Chelsea process more in the middle because we were defending very deep. ‘I am happy with Mesut. We will help him.’
