Arsenal completed their fourth signing of the summer on Tuesday, announcing the arrival of Lucas Torreira from Sampdoria.
The 22-year-old defensive midfielder starred at the World Cup in Russia and he flew to London after Uruguay were eliminated to seal his £26.5m transfer.
Arsenal’s new manager Unai Emery has been very busy since replacing Arsene Wenger at the helm.
The Gunners have already completed deals for Bernd Leno, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Stephan Lichtsteiner.
“In Lucas Torreira, we have signed a young player who is a very bright talent in the game,” Emery told Arsenal’s official website.
“A midfielder with great quality, I have enjoyed watching his performances for Sampdoria in the past two seasons, and we all saw him do very well for Uruguay in the World Cup.
“He is a young player already with good experience, but who wants to keep on growing.”
IAN WRIGHT ON TORREIRA
Late on Tuesday night, former Arsenal striker Ian Wright posted about Torreira’s arrival on Twitter.
The 54-year-old pundit is pleased with the club’s transfer business but has urged the Arsenal supporters to be patient with the young midfielder, suggesting that he’ll “need time to settle”.
“Great momentum in this window,” tweeted Wright. “Sokratis and Lichtsteiner’s age and experience balanced off with one (maybe two) exciting young players.
“Great season & WC for Torreira and he could slot straight in but will need some time to settle. Patience key. #Arsenal #Torreira👌🏾”
Arsenal have lacked bite in midfield and Torreira could be the solution – but it may take him a little time to adapt to Premier League football.
The 22-year-old won’t link up with his new Arsenal teammates until August but will wear the No 11 shirt that Mesut Özil occupied until this summer.
“I feel very happy [to be an Arsenal player]” said Torreira as per the club’s official website.
