Belgian defender Bjorn Engels has joked he would never be able to sign for Manchester United, because his wife is a Liverpool fan.

The centre back has sparked a transfer debate with his comments as he admitted he would love to move to the Premier League one day and that the Emirates would be his preferred destination.

While there has been nothing at all to suggest United would be interested in signing the 24-year-old centre back, who plays for Ligue 1 side Reims, the defender has joked he would never move to Old Trafford even if an offer was on the table.

The Belgian was asked by L’Equipe about a potential move to the Premier League.

“Not right now, but if my level continues to rise, it will come,” he said. “I’ve been there a couple of times in the past, maybe next time is the right one. Arsenal? It would be a dream.

“She’s [my wife] from Liverpool and all her family is a fan of the Reds. When Everton was interested in me, she said to me laughing: Everton is ok, but never Man United!”United are in the market for a centre back as they look to strengthen their back line and have been linked with a whole host of names since the summer, however Engels is not one of them.

While a defender is on the shopping list, it’s still anticipated that United will not making any signings before the transfer window closes next week.
