Arsenal were in search of a striker all through the summer but failed with moves for Higuain, Rooney and Suarez but maybe the Gunners failed in their pursuit of those strikers because they were prime targets, probably, Wenger should have gone for his own kind of striker. Unknown rough diamond that he could polish into a world class one. Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp gave an indication of who such player is and he is none other than Gabonese striker Aubameyang.
“I followed Aubameyang for two years. He’s absolutely an Arsene Wenger player.
“Luck was on our side. He wanted to come to us. If you could cut his hair he’d be a little bit like Thierry Henry. He is va-va-voom.”
Klopp was trying to draw comparism between the Gabonese forward and Arsenal’s French legend Thierry Henry. Some players have been tagged as the new Henry a la Loic Remy and Theo Walcott but neither has really stepped up the plate. I am not surprised Aubameyang is likened to Henry. He is also quick just like the Frenchman but I doubt if the ability in front of goal is at par too.
I agree Aubameyang was Wenger’s kind of player. Decent and with massive room for improvement. Wenger doesn’t really like them known, he wants to make them. Instead of us pursuing ‘unrealistic’ targets in the summer, we should have made a 12million Pounds offer to Saint Ettiene for the Gabonese forward. He would have been a decent back-up to Giroud and the fact that he can also play on the wings would have been a plus.
Let’s hope one of Wenger’s ignored targets won’t come to haunt Arsenal when they host Dortmund in the Champions League.
