Uruguayan midfielder Lucas Torreira has spoken out about his pending transfer to Arsenal after leaving the rest of his teammates and flying to London to complete a medical. The Gunners agreed a £26.4million fee with Sampdoria for Torreira shortly before the start of the World Cup, though opted not to conduct the medical in Russia and instead allowed him to focus exclusively on the tournament. But after Uruguay’s elimination at the hands of France in the quarter finals, Torreira is now ready to complete his move to the north London club.
Rather than joining the rest of his countrymen in flying back to Montevideo, the 22-year-old instead took a flight to London where he will finally complete a medical and sign a contract. Speaking at the airport prior to his flight to England on Sunday morning, Torreira apologised for not returning to Uruguay with the rest of the squad but admitted he could not hold off completing a move to Arsenal any longer.
He told Telenoche: ‘I would have been very happy to be able to return to Uruguay with my teammates, but this is a fantastic opportunity [to join Arsenal] and I do not want to waste it.’ The midfielder apologised for not being able to travel back to Montevideo right now, but says he will return ‘very soon to greet everyone’ once his move to Arsenal is confirmed.
Arsenal asked Torreira to fly straight from Russia to England and, having touched down in London, he is expected to undergo a medical at London Colney on Monday. The Gunners have moved quickly to wrap up deals for Stephan Lichtsteiner, Bernd Leno and Sokratis, with Torreira completing their first-team recruitment for the summer, though they are also working on a deal for Lorient teenager Matteo Guendouzi.
