David Ornstein, the BBC reporter has confirmed what has been suggested for many days now that Sokratis Papastathopoulos will be an Arsenal player this summer.

The defender is out of contract at Borussia Dortmund next summer and reports in the Guardian a few days back suggested that the North London club have agreed a £16 million deal with the German club.

However, the announcement of the deal will not be done now, but fans can expect the deal to be officially confirmed only in July.

David Ornstein also confirmed that the Gunners are in talks to sign Lucas Torreira from Sampdoria, but there isn’t any agreement between the clubs as yet.

However, the most important thing from the tweet is the Sokratis update and when it comes to Arsenal news, David is arguably one of the most trusted sources out there. So, when he says something, it is as good as done. The fact that he mentioned Sokratis being signed is as good as an official confirmation.

Here is the Tweet from David:

As widely reported Arsenal in talks to sign Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira. No agreement but central midfield a priority & 22yo Uruguay int’l seen as ideal fit technically + financially. also want a GK after defensive signings of Lichtsteiner & Sokratis (announced July)

The reason for the delay in the announcement of the transfer is more to do with Dortmund than Arsenal. It is to do with their financial year. This is what prevented the Gunners from confirming the deal much earlier.

The club has required defensive reinforcements and the signing of Sokratis ticks off an important box. He will become the second defensive signing of the summer after the Swiss full-back Stephan Lichtsteiner.

A defender is needed at the club for two reasons. The first being the retirement of Per Mertesacker and the second would be the long-term injury that Laurent Koscielny suffered against Atletico Madrid. This has left a void in the center back area. It certainly lacks experience.
