Sunderland youngster Sam Greenwood appears to have confirmed his move to Arsenal. Greenwood, 16, who was regarded as the shining light of Sunderland’s academy, notched up six goals and six assists for the club’s Under-18 side last season. The striker’s performances last term put a number of elite teams on red alert this summer including Manchester United, Liverpool and even Bundesliga outfit Stuttgart.
However, Greenwood will join Arsenal on a scholarship contract before agreeing to professional terms when he turns 17 in January. Amid the speculation linking him with a move to north London, the teenager uploaded a photograph to his Instagram page from Arsenal’s London Colney training base.
The Gunners have already landed Stephan Lichtsteiner, Bernd Leno and Sokratis Papastathopoulos this summer. Sampdoria and Uruguay midfielder Lucas Torreira is also set to be unveiled by the north London giants this week in a £26.4milllion move.
Asked about his imminent transfer to the Emirates, Torreira told Telenoche: ‘I would have been very happy to be able to return to Uruguay with my teammates, but this is a fantastic opportunity [to join Arsenal] and I do not want to waste it. Torreira apologised for not being able to travel back to Montevideo, but revealed that he plans to return ‘very soon to greet everyone’ once his move to Arsenal is announced.
