Unai Emery has told his Arsenal board not to offer fresh deals to both Aaron Ramsey and Danny Welbeck because he wants to promote youngsters such as Reiss Nelson into the first team.
Ramsey had been in lengthy negotiations with the club before Emery took charge and was close to signing a new deal. However, Emery instructed his board to withdraw their offer as he felt the Welshman didn’t suit his system at the Emirates.
Emery was open to selling him last summer and would have let him go in January for the right price. Arsene Wenger was influential in handing Santi Cazorla a new one-year deal after the Spaniard spent close to two years on the sidelines but the Times claim the Gunners will not do the same for Welbeck.
As well as freeing up resources, Emery wants more space in his first team squad for promising youngsters such as Nelson and Emile Smith Rowe.
Nelson is thriving on loan at Hoffenheim and Emery feels he will be ready for the Gunners’ first team when he returns next summer. Arsenal are confident that Welbeck could return before the end of the season but the club will allow him to leave on a free transfer.
