ARSENAL are on the verge of completing their first signing of the transfer window, according to reports.

The Gunners are currently without a manager, after Arsene Wenger bid farewell in their final league match against Huddlesfield.

But despite the lack of a boss, reports are surfacing from Italy that a deal is near completion for Borussia Dortmund centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

The 29-year-year old Greek defender has made 130 appearances for the Bundesliga giants since joining in 2013.

Video footage shows some of his most prominent moments for the German club.

And according to Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol, he could be on his way to the Emirates soon.

“He’s a player our colleagues at Sky in Italy are reporting talks with him are at an advanced stage,” he told the Sky Sports Transfer Talk podcast.

“They’re saying that a deal is ‘very, very close’.

“We don’t have that information but obviously our colleague at Sky Italy are very reliable when it comes to transfer information.

“They always seem to get fantastic transfer lines and that is what they’re reporting at the moment.

And Kaveh went on to explain how things are still happening, despite the north London side lacking a replacement manager.

He added: “It would seem to suggest things are going on behind the scenes at Arsenal.

“Maybe, some of those candidates, the preferred candidates, the leading candidates have been kept informed of where Arsenal are trying to strengthen in this window.

“But centre-back is certainly a priority.”

The news comes following reports the Gunners are keen to sell out-of-favour defender Shkodran Mustafi.

But they could struggle to shift the 29-year-old as he failed to make the German 23 man squad for this year’s World Cup.
