Real Madrid have been made firm favourites to sign Ilkay Gundogan in January. The Borussia Dortmund has attracted plenty of attention across Europe and was linked with a move away in the summer, however the Bundesliga club managed to keep hold of him.

Arsenal and Manchester United were the two clubs who were expected to sign the German but neither could persuade Dortmund to sell. They Premier League duo will go back in for him in January but have added competition from Liverpool and Real Madrid.

The Gunners still feel they are missing a top class player in their midfield and believe Gundogan to be that missing piece. He would fit in well with the growing contingent of Germans at Arsenal that include Per Mertesacker, Lukas Podolski and Mesut Özil with Arsene Wenger a native German speaker.

Manchester United’s midfield is noticeably more weak than Arsenal’s and should Gundogan move to Old Trafford, he is sure to be the main midfield man. He is a box-to-box midfielder with the ability to tighten the defence and ignite attacks and is just the sort of player David Moyes was looking for in the summer.

Liverpool have also entered the race for the German. Brendan Rodgers feels Liverpool’s strong start to the season will alert some of Europe’a top players that Liverpool are back in the big time and will try to lure Gundogan to show their ambition as much as anything else. With Steven Gerrard getting old, Gundogan would be a perfect replacement.

All three must battle with Madrid for the 22-year old. Carlo Ancelotti believes Gundogan will be one of the best in his position in a few years and wants him to be at Madrid when he is. The Spanish club have an over the Premier League trio as they can use Nuri Sahin in the deal.

The Turkish midfielder left Dortmund for Madrid but after an unsuccessful spell was sent on loan to Liverpool before returning to Dortmund on an 18-month loan. That expires next summer and Madrid could use Sahin as a bargaining chip in the deal for Gundogan.
