Although the transfer window is closed, clubs can still sign players on a free transfer and if reports from Italy and Portugal are anything to be believed, Arsenal are on the verge of completing the signing of American defender Oguchi Onyewu on a free transfer. Although the transfer window is closed, clubs can still sign players who are not attached to any club. Oguchi Onyewu who is a central defender only recently ended his contract with Sporting Club de Portugal and he is free to sign for another club should he choose to do so.
Arsenal are currently short in the centre of their defense as they sweat over the injury to club Captain Thomas Vermaelen. Onyewu who is 31 is an experience campaigner who won’t mind been Arsenal’s 4th choice keeper and is worthy of playing in the first team should the need arise.
Although the reports can’t be verified but considering Wenger signed 2 players on a free contract and the fact that he likes players who are cheap ( free transfers also cost money anyway ), it will not be out of character if the rumours that he will be signing Onyewu happen to be true.
