Mesut Ozil is edging closer to a summer switch to Manchester United, according to reports.
Ozil, who was Arsenal’s record signing when he joined from Real Madrid on deadline day in 2013, has been stalling on a new contract at the Emirates and the possibility of the German putting pen to paper on an improved deal doesn’t look likely at this point – with the Gunners potentially losing the 28-year old for free in the summer.
The former Schalke and Werder Bremen man has been linked with a number of clubs, namely Fenerbahce and Inter Milan, but United are said to be the leading contenders for his signature, and now Kike Marin from El Confidencial is reporting that Ozil is getting closer to an agreement that will see him move to Old Trafford.
A recent report from The Mirror claimed the World Cup winner’s preference is to join link up with Jose Mourinho for the second time of his career. The Portuguese boss arguably got the best out of him in their time together at Real Madrid and he appears keen on coaching him for a second time.
Despite not striking you as an archetypal Mourinho player, Ozil won one La Liga and one Copa Del Rey under Mourinho’s tutelage, registering 47 assists and scoring 19 goals in 103 league appearances, as per Who Scored.
It was Mourinho who signed off his departure to Arsenal four years back, and in a spell in English football l that has brought plenty of criticism for Ozil and his performance, particularly in big games, he has won three FA Cups in four seasons.
But like his teammate Alexis Sanchez, who is also out of contract in the summer, his desire to compete for the major trophies could well see him move on for nothing.
