ARSENAL are prioritising a move for Schalke star Leon Goretzka over Barcelona’s Rafinha.
That’s according to Italian journalist Emanuele Giulianelli.
Arsenal have already completed the club-record signing of Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon but Arsene Wenger is keen to continue splashing the cash.
The Gunners have been strongly linked with a move for Barcelona star Rafinha with his future uncertain at the Nou Camp.
However, journalist Giulianelli claims Schalke midfielder Goretzka is Wenger’s preferred choice.
“Disregard the Rafinha rumours, Arsenal fans. I can confirm that Leon Goretzka is the real target,” he told Tribal Football.
“The Schalke 04 player is of great interest for Arsene Wenger, but at the present moment the German club don’t want him to leave.
“Rafinha, of Barcelona, is only a second choice and Arsenal management are not so convinced about this option.”
Reports in Germany back up his claims but state Schalke are reluctant to let him leave.
Goretzka, who played a key part in Germany’s Confederations Cup triumph earlier this summer, is under contract with Schalke until next year.
However, Schalke’s attempts to tie him down to a new deal have so far been rejected by the 22-year-old.
Goretzka has been at Schalke since signing from Bochum in 2013 and has made 116 appearances for the club to date.
