Leicester City have told AS Roma that Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez will not be sold this summer.

Riyad Mahrez has had a lot of speculation around his future in the current transfer window, particularly in relation to a possible move to Arsenal. Arsène Wenger confirmed earlier in the window that he liked the player, and this just fuelled the whole situation.

However, AS Roma are the only club reported to have made a bid for the Algerian at this point, which Sky Sports journalists are now claiming is off the table, with talks “definitely over”.

The news isn’t particularly surprising, since Roma were rumoured to be so far off Leicester’s valuation of the player. Mahrez has previously stated publicly that he wants to leave and could be interested in a move to Roma, but at this point his future is more in the hands of his club, with years left on his contract.

Arsène Wenger said last week that Arsenal were never close to signing the Premier League winner, despite what he had said about rating the player, because the Gunners already had “similar types” with Alex Iwobi, Jack Wilshere and Mesut Özil.

Mahrez had a less impressive campaign in 2016/17 than he did in Leicester’s title winning season of 2015/16 which may have put off Arsenal, I feel. He had an agreement with the Leicester bosses that he would stay another year, according to his statement, if he could be sold this summer. But that doesn’t appear to be on the cards.

With two weeks remaining in the transfer window, it remains to be seen whether any other club makes a move for the 26-yeaar-old, or if he will remain at Leicester.
