BARCELONA TRANSFER NEWS: Barcelona are eyeing up former Arsenal striker Carlos Vela for a January transfer.
Vela, who now plays for Los Angeles FC in MLS, spent seven years at Arsenal between 2005 and 2012, before moving to Real Sociedad after an initial loan spell.
He scored 73 goals in 250 appearances for the Spanish side before going to the USA a year ago, but now Barca could bring the Mexican back to La Liga.
Ernesto Valverde’s men are looking for a back-up to Luis Suarez, and Spanish football expert Sid Lowe said on the ESPN FC podcast: “ Barcelona are trying to find a striker, and a particular type of striker.
“They’re trying to find a striker who they believe has the talent to fit into the Barcelona team, but who isn’t the kind of striker who will necessarily demand to play every game.
“They know this is a striker who has to accept that he may well only be there until the end of the season, has to accept that he’s there to try and give a rest to Luis Suarez to try and rotate through the forward line.
“And so you have difficulties persuading some players of taking that role – they’ve looked at a whole number of strikers over the last week or so.
“There’s been a lot of talk of [Cristhian] Stuani but it would cost €15m, Alvaro Morata is some one who has been offered to them and they haven’t necessarily turned it down but he will probably end up at Atletico Madrid.
“So they are trying to look at the many alternatives and this, while it appears completely left-field and on the face of it very, very bizarre indeed, is one they think could function as a short-term solution to a short term problem.”
