Arsene Wenger has revealed in his latest press conference that Alexis Sanchez will miss the start of the season after picking up an abdominal injury.
The Chilean international could now be out for up to two weeks, meaning he will miss Friday’s opener against Leicester City and the Gunners’ meeting with Stoke City on August 19.
It’s a big blow for the Londoners but they have been without Alexis for the entirety of pre-season. He was given a late holiday after his Confederations Cup excursions with Chile and had not long returned to training.
He’s seen very little of his manager in months and has now suffered his second injury in a matter of weeks, previously picking up the flu.
Arsenal will still have a strong side to face Leicester City on Friday evening and will be buoyed after beating Chelsea in the Community Shield. The Gunners are desperate to go into the new season without any hiccups as they look to finally challenge for the Premier League title.
If rumours are to be believed, Arsenal may have to do it this season without Alexis, with the forward linked with a number of clubs this summer. There are still three weeks remaining in the transfer window and suitors may ramp up the pressure as time runs out.
In his press conference, Wenger was asked about the possibility of Alexis moving to Paris Saint-Germain, as many reports have suggested. Although he denied any contact being made.
For now, supporters will wait for Alexis to return to the first-team and are hoping his injury is genuine.
