Marco Asensio’s performance at the Nou Camp last night has got Arsenal fans talking about a potential move to the Emirates.
While Arsene Wenger’s team would have to battle Europe’s elite sides for his signature, reports from the player’s home country suggest the club are willing to pay Real Madrid his £72million release clause.
It would be a major coup for the Gunners if they could sign the attacking midfielder, especially given he is one of the most highly-rated youngsters in the world at present.
After an impressive season at the Santiago Bernabeu, where he scored in the Champions League final victory over Juventus, Asensio caught the eye for Spain at the European U21 Championship.
Despite the wealth of talent in Los Blancos’ starting XI, Asensio will be hoping to force his way into Zinedine Zidane’s starting XI on a permanent basis for his boyhood club.
However, given Arsenal’s reported interested in the player, the 21-year-old is believed to have requested ’emergency talks’ with his club to seal a new deal in the Spanish capital.
Although the chance to link up with his idol Mesut Ozil in north London would be appealing for Asensio, he has previously insisted that he wants to remain with Madrid.
Here is what Asensio has said about his future over the past year.
“I spoke with the boss, who told me to be calm and work hard at training.
He has always shown his confidence in me, always been very close to me, and happy with me.
“He wanted me to stay, I wanted to stay too, always said that, my plan was to use pre-season to win a place in the squad, and that is how it has turned out.
“I am here to fight for a place, I am available for him whenever he needs me. I am comfortable in any position in attack, either side or in the centre.”
