Arsenal’s pursuit of Uruguayan World Cup star Lucas Torreira has been boosted after the player’s father revealed that a medical at The Emirates is imminent.

The Sampdoria midfielder has been linked with a £27m move to the Gunners during this summer transfer window and he could be set to complete a move to England before the end of the month.

Torreira’s father, Ricardo, reportedly told an Italian Radio station that his son will be travelling to London for a medical when Uruguay’s involvement at the World Cup in Russia is over.

“I want the best for my son and I also know that Arsenal showed a lot of interest in him,” Torreira Sr. told Radio Crc. “It’s not done, neither is it official, because he hasn’t signed anything, but there’s a great chance that Lucas’s future will be in England.

“There was no problem in the negotiations, and the latest is that as soon as the World Cup ends, he’ll go to London for a medical.”

Torreira has played a starring role for Uruguay during their run to the World Cup quarter-finals and they are due to play France in the last-eight on Friday afternoon.

The combative midfielder scored four goals and laid on one assist in 36 appearances for Sampdoria in Serie A last season, as well as picking up six yellow cards.

If he were to move to Arsenal then he would become Unai Emery’s third new signing since taking over as manager, following the additions of midfielder Stephan Lichsteiner and goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
