Arsenal have joined the race to sign Tottenham target and Lyon star Tanguy Ndombele as they look to bolster their midfield this summer, according to reports. The Gunners’ interest in Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira has been widely reported, but the club still do not have an agreement in place with either the club or the player and are now waiting until after Uruguay’s World Cup campaign to pursue it further. However, French newspaper Le Progres report that an alternative option has emerged in the form of Ndombele.
The 21-year-old joined Lyon on a season-long loan from Amiens last summer, with the option to buy him for just £7m, and enjoyed an excellent campaign, alerting the likes of Tottenham and Roma. Spurs appeared to have earmarked the young Frenchman as the perfect heir to Mousa Dembele – who has offers from Italy and China – but Lyon want at least three times what they paid.
That delay has allowed other clubs to enter the race for Ndombele, with Arsenal now tracking the midfielder very closely; Juventus, Manchester City and Liverpool are also keen. Lyon president Jena-Michel Aulas is keen to keep Ndombele at Lyon, but would welcome a potential bidding war if Arsenal, Spurs and others all go head to head to sign him.
