Chelsea FC are now leading Arsenal in the race to sign AS Roma defender Kostas Manolas this summer, according to reports in the British media.
The Daily Mirror is reporting that the Blues have beaten Arsenal to the signing of the centre-half this summer and that the Greece international now looks set for a move to Stamford Bridge.
The same story quotes unnamed sources in Italy as saying that Chelsea FC have activated the defender’s £34m release clause and are now closing in on a deal to bring him to the west London club.
Manolas is no stranger to reports linking the 27-year-old with a move to the Premier League, and the defender has long been touted as a possible target for Chelsea FC.
Now though, it is being claimed that the Blues have wrapped up the signing of the defender ahead of their London rivals Arsenal.
Neither Arsenal nor Chelsea FC would be able to offer Manolas Champions League football for next season, after both clubs missed out on top four finishes last term.
Chelsea FC are yet to officially confirm any new signings this summer despite their disappointing Premier League form last term, as they ended up fifth in the table.
